About John Eachorn Achorn Acorn
Died - At Lot 49, on the 19th ult., after an illness of nine days duration, which he bore with Christian patience and resignation to the Divine will, Mr. John Acorn, in the 96th year of his age. The deceased was born in Broad Bay, Maine, U.S.A., where he joined H.B.M.'s 3rd Reg't. of Rangers and with them emigrated to this Island in the year 1782; and was discharged with good character, which he bore throughout his life. He leaves 14 children, 132 grandchildren, 222 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, the most of whom live and cherish his memory with fond affection. The deceased was a member of the Wesleyan Society for upwards of forty years. His end was peace. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." - Islander July 3, 1857

The deceased was born in Broad Bay, State of Maine, where he joined H.R. Majesty’s 3d regiment of Rangers; and with them emigrated to this Island in the year 1782, and was discharged with a good character, which he bore throughout his life. He leaves 14 children, 132 grand children, 22 great grand children, and 4 great great grand children; the most of whom live and cherish his memory with fond affection. From the history of Waldoboro ME The original German name meaning fruit of the oak. Mr. Edgar O. Achorn says: "Wherever you find the name of 'Achorn,' which is a corruption of the German name <Eichorn,' you may know that the person burdened with it reverts back to Waldoboro, for nowhere else was such an abortion on this name ever perpetrated."

MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 1 John Acorn, the founder of the Acorn family,of this island,arrived here in 1782, when quite a young man. He was born near Danforth, [in Broad Bay, York County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, now Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine, and was a miller like his father, Mathias Acorn. A native of Hease, Darmstadt Germany,Mathias was drowned in his prime at Moose Head Rapids. "
John Acorn having fought with the British Army as a Loyalist was given 100 acres of land at Vernon River by Gov. Patterson and later it was deeded to him by Gov. Fanning in 1795.Later he abandoned his Vernon River mill and settled in Pownal, building a gristmill and a sawmill on Mill Creek."

"In September 1788,[in Vernon River, Lot 50, Queens County, PEI. ] John Acorn married Eleanor Williams, daughter of Captain [Frederick] Williams, a retired officer of the British army who settled in Nova Scotia.The bride was 17 and the groom 27.They had 13 children: seven sons, and six daughters: ..."
John Acorn died 6/19/1857 age 96.His death notice which appeared in The Islander 7/3/1857 mentioned his descendants, but not his wife. Eleanor predeceased him by a number of years. Both are buried in the Pownal, [Lot 49] PEI United Methodist Church Cemetary.
