About John D. Arnold
John Arnold, son of Samuel Arnold [of Spotsylvania Co. Va and Surry Co. North Carolina] and Elizabeth Wright, married first [Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, Kentucky, A History of the State, 7th edition (F. A. Battey & Co., 1887) p. 743. ] a Miss Wood. Anna Wood Arnold daughter of Stephen and Presha Riley Wood and granddaughter of Ninian Riley [1726-1814] left Surry County, North Carolina in 1796 for Kentucky. The group, a company of 10 families in 7 wagons with 40 children and their milk cows, traveled about 10 miles per day. Anna fell sick and left the party remaining with relatives. She died omly about 40 miles from their departure point. The widower John Arnold with his son "little Sammie" came on to Kentucky in the fall of 1797. John was born in Goldsborough, North Carolina. Elizabeth Wright, John Arnold’s mother was a sister-in-law to Jesse Allnutt of Owen County. John and Anna Wood Arnold were the parents of Samuel W. Arnold [born 25 July 1795]. John Arnold was in Gallatin County in 1810, but apparently did not move to Owen County until after 1820 as the census of that year lists him as living at Port William [Carrollton]. Around 1820 Samuel and Thomas Arnold were probably living in the Dallasburg [Wheatley] area based on the names of their neighbors. By 1821, John owned land in Owen County that bordered Thomas Arnold. In 1822 Thomas Arnold, John Arnold, and Moses Baker, Sr. deeded land [part of a tract on Twin Creeks] to William Morgan, Samuel J. Baker, and Moses Baker, Jr., trustees of the Baptist Church of Emons. The land amounted to 3 acres taken out of the three parties tracts of land and included the new meeting house.
John Arnold married second Nancy Fryer, daughter of Robert and Mary Fryer. Robert Fryer was a charter member [1787] of the Marble Creek Baptist Church in Fayette County, Kentucky. John and Nancy were the parents of Calvin W. [died 1893], Huldah Jane, Elizabeth [Clark], Harriett [Shelton], Jane [Wood], Eliza, James, John, America, Joshua, and Martha Arnold. John married thirdly in 1825 Elizabeth Veal Walker, daughter of Samuel Veal. Children from the third marriage of John were Thomas [1825-1898], Elijah [born 28 Dec 1831], and Elisha [born about 1828] Arnold. Elijah Arnold was sheriff of Owen County 1857-1858, County Attorney 1862-1866, and for a time he practiced law at New Liberty. In 1876 he moved to New Columbus where he owned a farm. John Arnold was the father of 18 children. He was born 4 May 1776 and died 24 Dec 1851 in Owen County. His burial is marked by a tombstone just outside of Wheatley.
Huldah Jane Arnold, daughter of John Arnold and Nancy Fryer was born 10 Mar 1804 and died 26 Oct 1880. Huldah married Jesse A. Smith [son of William Smith and Miss Alexander] 26 June 1822. They were the parents of William T., Daniel Shelton, Hariett [Alexander], and Enoch H. Smith. Enoch is the writer’s wife’s great grandfather.
