   "After being run by members of the same family for 250 years, John Ashton & Son, the Carno farm merchants has been sold. It is one of the oldest established firms in Wales and Mr Ashton still has ledgers from 200 years ago.

   The Ashtons arrived in the district at the direct request of Elizabeth I.  A George Ashton, Salopian and able fiddler, builder and farmer, was brought over the border by Lord Pembroke, one of the Herbert family, to teach the locals farming. He was given land at Llawryglyn.

   Valentine Ashton, great-great-grandfather of Mr Bryan Ashton, set up the firm which for the last 200 years has supplied farmers in the Carno district. Now the link has been broken"
