Letters from Bruce County, Written by Pioneer Joseph Bacon 1795-1882 – Dean Wheaton

  • John, born Dec 31 1831 in England, came with his family in 1835 at age 3 to Buffalo, NY, then to Hamilton, Upper Canada by 1839 and to Arthur Township, Wellington District, Canada West in 1840.

He married Elizabeth Hunter, born 1837 in Quebec, about 1856. They had six children; five girls and one boy between 1858 and 1869. The first five were born in Ontario.

  • John received a Crown Patent on Lot 16, Con 1 SDR on 17 May 1854 and sold the lot on 3 Nov 1881.
  • In June 13 1882 he made entry on the SE 36-12-25 W1 in the RM of Woodsworth, Manitoba and received a patent for the land on Oct 31 1892
  • John was probably a farmer in both Ontario and Manitoba. He died Feb 16 1917 in Manitoba.

Elizabeth died March 25 1919 in Manitoba. Both are buried in the Kinsmore Cemetery on the NE 1/4-29-12-24 W1 in the R. M. of Woodsworth. (four miles west and four miles north of Kenton).

  • John was originally buried in the Scotia Cemetery but was re-interred at the newly opened Kinsmore Cemeter
