Dr. John J. Barnett was elected Capt. of the !st Kentucky Cavalry, CSA. Oct.14, 1861, until captured on Aug. 19, 1862, in Webster Co., Kentucky, while organizing troops. He was shipped to a Prisoner of War camp (Camp Morton, Indiana) and later to the Prisoner of War Depot at Sandusky, Ohio. On Nov.22, 1862, he was paroled and repatriated to a Prisoner Exchange in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He left the army after that and returned to Raleigh, Kentucky.
