Boyertown, Jan. 6--John L. Bauer, 105 North Reading avenue, died suddenly this morning of heart failure, aged 70 years 4 months and 22 days. He arose 15 minutes before his demise and remarked to his wife that he had not rested well during the night. When through dressing he fell to the floor and expired. His wife and a daughter heard him fall and found him a corpse. He had suffered from heart trouble for some time. On Oct. 25, last, Mr. Bauer was taken ill with acute indigestion, with which he suffered several days. Since then he was able to be about, but was not in good health. Last Sunday evening the family physician was called. Deceased lived on a farm at Bally for 30 years, and 13 years ago moved to Boyertown, where he followed the fire insurance business, being manager of this district, for, and a director of the Goshenhoppen Mutual Fire Insurance Co., of Pennsburg. He was a director of the National Bank of Boyertown; the Old Folks' Mennonite Home, and secretary of Eastern District conference of the Mennonite Church. Some years ago he was a director of the National Bank of East Greenville, and 10 years ago was a local school director. He was a son of the late Andrew and Deborah (Longacre) Bauer, and was born and raised near Congo, Montgomery county. He was twice married. His first wife, Anna (Bechtel), died in 1883. In 1885 he married Sophia Bertolet Gable, who survives, besides three children from the first union: Laura, at home; Irvin, New York, and Annie, wife of Elmer K. Berkey, Boyertown. There are three grandchildren, Bessie, Grace and Lester Berkey, and a brother, Aaron, living on the old homestead at Congo. Four brothers and sisters, who preceeded him in death, all died suddenly. He was a meber of the Hereford Mennonite Church, at Bally. Undertaker James J. Brown has charge. Reading Eagle, Jan. 6, 1917, page 4
