About John H. Beard

A Mr. J.H. Beard served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War in Company G, 45th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, as a Private. He may have been killed in the Civil War on June 8, 1864, and was buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. I find no record of John H. Beard after the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Federal Census records, so this may have been him.

In the 1860 census he was living in Clinton, Kentucky, although he was born in Tennessee. He was 24 years old and was living with his 51-year old widowed mother, Mary H. Beard and brothers James W., 26, William H., 20, Alexander C., 17, and also in their home was Emaline Beard, 23, and her daughter Marietta, 1 year old. Emaline may have been the wife of John, and after John died in the Civil War, his younger brother, Alexander, married Emaline.

In the 1870 Census for Albany, Clinton, Kentucky, Alex C., 27, and Emiline, 30, were living with children, Marietta, 11, Nancy S., 9, William O., 3, Martha E., 2, and Mary H. Beard, Alex's 60-year old widowed mother Mary H. Because there was a 6 year gap between Emaline's children Nancy and William, I tend to think that Marietta and Nancy were children of John H. Beard and Emaline, and then after John died and Emaline married Alexander, which would have been about 1865, their son William was born in 1867.

In the 1880 census for Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky, Alexander C. Beard, 37, was living with wife, Emeline, 35, (probably the wrong age for her, because if she was 30 in the 1870 census, she would have been 40 in the 1880 census), and children William, 12, Martha, 10, Oto, 8, (probably son known as Oat or Oatis or I. Ota), Alice, 6, Orlando, 5, Bertie, 2, and Nancy, 20, who was listed as a step-daughter.

By the 1900 census, Emaline, 63, was living in McLennan County, Texas, with husband Alexander, 57, and children Lander, 25 (Orlando in 1870), and Berte 20, (2 years old in the 1880 census). All of the family members were born in Kentucky, Alexander in September of 1842, Emaline in February of 1837, Lander or Orlando in March of 1875, and Berte, born in December of 1879.

On the same census page, next door to Alexander and Emaline, was their son, Oat Beard, 30, and his wife, Ena, 27, who were living with their son Vivian Dangerfield Beard, 6, and daughters, Beryl, 3, Portia, 2, and Pauline, one month old. In the 1910 census, Alex, 67, and Emaline, listed as Emma, 73, were living with children Alice, 37, Landy or Orlando, 35, and Burt, 27, in McLennan County, Texas, on Eddy and Moody Road.

In the 1920 census, Emaline, listed as Emma, 83, was living with children, Alice, 47, Landie, 45, and Birt, 39, and her husband, Alexander had passed away sometime between 1910 and 1920. He was listed variously in census records over the years as follows: 1850 and 1860 as Alexander C. Beard; 1870 as Alex C. Beard; 1880 as A.C. Beard; 1900 as Edward (but that was an error made by the census taker because you can see on the hand-written record that Alexander was written and then Edward was written over it); and in 1910 as Alex Beard, although the typed record shows his name as Alaric, but on the handwritten record it looks like it reads as Alex.

Emaline passed away two years later on December 18, 1922, in McLennan County, Texas, at the age of 85 years old. Emaline was also listed several different ways in the census, Emaline, Emeline, Emiline and Emma, but these types of spelling errors were common in those days, as the census takers did not always take the time to make sure they were spelling the names correct. Her death certificate reads Emiline Beard, born February 27, 1837, in Kentucky to a Mr. and Mrs. Savage. The informant on her death certificate was her son Birt Beard, who was residing in Eddy, McLennan, Texas. Emiline died from old age. and was buried in the Eddy Cemetery on December 14, 1922.

In the 1850 census, Emilene was living with her father and mother and siblings in Wayne County, Kentucky, and they were listed as follows in the census record: Ewing Savage, 46, Martha, 41, Sarah, 17, Malissa, 16, Emeline, 13, George W., 11, Joseph F., 9, Hannah, 7, Martha, 6, and Shelby, 3 years old. All family members were born in Kentucky, and Ewing was working as a laborer.

Emilene's mother's maiden name was Mings. Her father, Ewing Savage, was listed in the Wayne County, Kentucky census having 2 males under age 5; 1 male 30-39; 1 female under 5; 2 females 5-9; 2 females 10-14; 1 female 30-39 years old. One person was employed in agriculture, 1 person over 20 could not read and write, but he owned no slaves.
