John BONAWITZ Biography
John Bonawitz, a brother to Ben, also served in the war at Baltimore in 1814; he had two sons and three daughters. John and William both served in the Civil War.
John was killed in the mines. One daughter was married to Michael Minnig; one to James Rohrer, and one to John Fegley.
John married [1] Fredericka Phleger, after 1850.
He married [2] Mary Ann Clymer.
They lived in Reading, Pennsylvania, and John worked as a blacksmith. He declared that he had no children living in 1898.
During the Civil War, John served in Co. G., 123rd PA Infantry as a private. He enlisted on August 8, 1862, in Pittsburg and mustered out on May 13, 1863.
He died at the National Military Home in Jefferson Township, Montgomery County. In his files, his middle initial is given as "A," but elsewhere it was recorded as "H." He is described as 5'7" tall with a dark complexion and hazel eyes. He applied for disability in 1897 and was admitted to the home in 1903. His nearest relative was nephew Howell Bonawitz, of Reading.
