The Name and Family of Bourne Compiled by The Media Research Bureau, Washington, D.C.

The name of Bourne is said to have been of local origin and derived from the residence of it's first bearer at "the burn" or stream. It is found on ancient records in the various forms of Burne, Burn, Bourn, Bowrn, Bowrne, Borne, Born, and Bourne, of which the last is the most generally accepted form of the name in America Today,

One of the most ancient of the many families of the name in England was that of John de Bourne, Sheriff of the county of Kent in the time of King Edward the First, who is said to have been descended from a family anciently settled in that place. This John was the father of another John de Bourne, who was the ancestor of Bartholomew Bourne of Kent in the time of King Henry the Sixth, who was the father of James, who died in 1467, leaving issue of James, and several daughters, of who the eldest son was the father of Bartholomew, who had a son named Henry, who married Elizabeth Cromer and was the father by her of Francis, James, and John, of whom the first died in 1615, leaving issue of, among others James, John, and Thomas.

Another early line of the family in England was that represented about the beginning of the fifteenth century by John Bourne of Somersetshire, who was the father of William, who had John, who had John, who was the father of William of Buckinghamshire, who married to Mary Carson Poure and was the father by her of Walter, Matthew, and Francis, of whom the last married Edith Lyte and had issue by her of Gilbert, Francis, and others.

Another branch of the Somersetshire line is said to have been descended from Philip Bourne of the early sixteenth century, who was the brother of Sir John Bourne, Secretary of the State to Queen Mary, and the father of Richard and Gilbert, of whom the first married Sylvester Tybolde and had Gilbert, John, and Rodger.

In the later part of the fifteenth century one John Bourne or Bowrne was living in the country of Essex and was the father of his wife Margaret of William and David, of whom the first married Margaret Riche and was the father by her of, among others, William, Robert, and Richard, of whom the second married Catherine Medley and was the father by her of William, Robert, Edward, and several daughters.

Among the other early lines of the family in England were those of Henry Bourne of Leicesterashire in the latter part of the sixteenth century, who was the father of Pickering, Samuel, Nathaniel, and Emanuel;

Richard Bourne of Oxfordshire in the latter sixteenth century, who married Katherine Wilmore and was the father by her of William, John, and Elizabeth;

Richard Bourne of Worchetershire in the early seventeenth century, who was the father of a son of the name; and brothers William and Nicholas Bourne or Burne of Lancashire in the early seventeenth century, of whom the second was the father of Robert, John, Nicholas, and Thomas.

It is not definitely know from which of the many illustrious lines of the family in England the first emigrants of the name to America were descended, but is generally believed that all of the Bournes were of common Ancestry at a remote period.

{Document Continues} several paragraphs later:

One of the most ancient and frequently recurrent of the several coat-of-arms of the Bourne family is described as follows;

Arms... "Argent, on a chevron engrailed glues between three lions rampant sable three mascles or."

Crest,,, "An arm erect issuing out of clouds proper, vested or, cuff argent, in the hand proper a phoen sable, held by the point."

(Arms taken from Burke's "General Armory", 1884.)

Note by Richard Bourne: This document goes on to describe the different lines of Bourne that came to America. Today's documentation is more closely recorded but I felt the above information could be useful to some. The original document sent to my Grandfather I would estimate was prepared in the early 1900's.

Of the above lines in this document the first described fits nicely in the line ending with this person John Bourne.
