About John Brame

I've come across information on John Richens/Richins through doing research on the families of early Middlesex Co, VA. John seems to have been a character. He was a participant in Bacon's Rebellion which wasn't all that common among the Middlesex population. He was also the only one punished to any extent. He was banished from the county, but popped back up there soon after.

He and John Brame/Brim were neighbors and friends. John Brame was another one of those who participated in Bacon's Rebellion. Brame was a large landholder and had 12 children with his wife Mary Dabney. After Brame died she married John Meacham who had at least 6 children with his wife Michal possibly Blake.

John Richins had inherited land from John Harris. I'm not sure of their connection.... haven't gotten that far yet, but he spent 20 some years battling Nicholas Cocke in courts over that land. Cocke along with a Humphrey Owen was overseer of the estate.

I don't find any children for John and Penelope, but she must have been a bit of a "rabble-rouser" herself. See the following:

Richard Holmes, Robert Hewes & Penelope Richins were complained agt at the Court by Mr. Richard Parrot Senr. that they in high contempt of this sd. Authoraty did trye to fasten to a Doggs Tayle a Warrant of Hue & Cry issued out by Mr. John Vause one of his Majties Justices of ye peace for this County, for ye. apprehention of one Thomas Smith Servt. to Mr. John Sheppard. all wch appearing to this Court by good Evidence & there own Confession, It is Therefore Ordered that ye Sheriff of this County doe imediately take into his safe Custody the Bodys of the said Richard Holmes, Robert Hewes and Penelope Richins And them convey to ye publique Whipping Poste and Cause the said Richard Holmes & Robert Hewes to be Whipped wth Thirty nine lashes Striped upon there bare backes, and the said Penelope Richins with Twenty nine Lashes. And the Sheriff is Ordered to detayne them in Safe Custody untill they enter into Bond wth sufficient Securaty that they shall beare themselves peaceably & quietely towards the Kings Majties and all his Leige people

He married Mary Dabney6,7,8,9 November 15, 1674 in Middlesex Co, VA10. She was born Abt. 1655, and died January 16, 1745/46 in Middlesex Co, VA11,12.

Was involved in Bacon's Rebellion.
