John Burgess (Humphrey)

Here's the info about the Burgess connection. James Gustus Burgess b.November 1861 and John Burgess b.January 1863 were the sons of William M Burgess and Matilda Coleman of Fayette County Georgia. William was killed in the Civil War and Matilda Shows up living with Jesse Humphrey age about 67 in the 1870 Roane County, Tn Census and Matilda age 36, James age 9 and John Age 7. They were all listed under the name of Humphrey. John was married 2 times and so was James. I think John married a Rebecca Brown first using the Burgess name (11-14-1884 Roane County TN>) and then He married Ellen Simpson (2-12-1890 in Roane County TN.) Used the last name Humphrey. Then on the 1900 Meigs County TN. Census they are living next door to each other and John and Ellen are listed with the last name Burgess. Our aunt Hazel told me that James and his brother John had a falling out and John went to using the name Humphrey. After studing everything, I've come up with the theory that John never was divorce from his 1st marriage and found it advantages to use the Humphrey name. Our grandmother Carrie said that they still used the Burgess name on and off durning thier early days of marriage,William and Carrie.
