John Burleson, Jr

John was the last of seven children born to Major John Burleson and Mary "Polly" (Hodges) Burleson. His paternal grandparents were Aaron Burleson II and Rachel (Hendricks) Burleson. Their graves have not been found.

John's siblings were Temperance "Kenty" Burleson (m. Levi P. Taylor), Rachel Burleson, Thomas Burleson, James Burleson, Jane Burleson and Joseph Burleson. Their family name is also shown as "Burlison" in some record transcriptions. Their graves have not been found.

John married 1st Elizabeth Gimlin (1819-1861) on Aug. 21, 1833 and with her had eleven children: David H., Mary, Lucinda (died young), Lavina, Levi Taylor, Melinda, Martha Pearl, John Edward, James Buchanan, William Maddox and Joseph Larkin.

John married 2nd, as her 3rd husband, Mrs. Elizabeth (Smart) Thomas (1829-1924), widow of David, on Jan. 18, 1865. They had two children, Sarah Elizabeth and Seth Henry. Their blended family is shown in 1870 census for Carlinville.

After John died, his widow lived first with their son, Seth, then with daughter Mary from her first marriage (to Leander Thomas) and lastly with son Stephen from her 2nd marriage (to Leander's brother, David). She died at Stephen's home in East St. Louis, IL in 1924.

John is recorded in family records as having been buried in the Trabue Cemetery in Carlinville, Illinois, where his 1st wife, Elizabeth (Gimlin) Burleson was buried. It became the Hacke Cemetery. No markers have been found. His widow, Elizabeth (Smart) Burleson was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Upper Alton, Illinois.
