A John Cavender is listed as the head of a family in the first U.S. census (1790). (Probably his son.)
JOHN4 CAVENDER, SR. (HENRY3, WILLIAM HENRY2, JAMES WESLEY1) was born 1744 in Princess Anne Co., VA, and died Abt. 1788 in Norfolk County, VA. He married ELIZABETH FRANKS October 23, 1768 in Norfolk County, VA2,3, daughter of ROBERT FRANKS. She was born 1748 in Princess Anne County, VA, and died Unknown.
In 1789 the family was living in Princess Anne County, VA and consisted of 6 people and one slave. Also shown living in the 1760 Reconstructed Census of Princess Anne County. (LDS AFN: FW8N-3D)
10/23/1768: Marriage license issued to John Cavender and Elizabeth Franks (formerly Elizabeth Thomas [??doesn't fit]) after her father, Robert Franks, formally gave his permission to the Court Clerk of Norfolk County, VA, for them to be married. They were married the next day in Northumberland County, VA. Apparently his daughter was not then of legal age to be married without parent's consent. (Source: J.T. Cavender of Ohio thru Bev Cavender...Cavender@aol.com)
Be pleased to let the bearer, John Cavender, have marriage licenses for him and my daughter, Elisabeth Franks. Test. Witness: John Cordon, Henry Crosby, Andrew Wilson to Mr. Samuel Bush- Clerk of Norfolk County, Virginia.--By Robert Franks-OA 1768 (4N59), William and Mary College Quarterly, Williamsburg, VA.
