About John Chenoweth

John was the first son of Thomas Chenoweth and Mary Prickett,. He served in the Revolutionary War and married Rachel Kerr about 1780, probably near Old Town in present day Allegany Co., MD. She is thought to be the daughter of Benjamin Kerr. By 1790 they were in Mason Co., KY where John is found in the 1790 Census. They had 7 children over the course of ten years. The Chenoweth histories list all John and Rachel's children as born in Ohio. John is believed to be the first of his siblings to move to this area of Ross County in the Scioto Valley that would become Pike County. But Rachel died January 16, 1792, one week after her last son, Elijah, was born, and, by the Census, John was still in Mason Co., KY in 1790. So it is likely that all these early children were born in Kentucky.

John next shows up in Shelby Co., KY where he remarried to Mary Van Buskirk on March 11, 1793. She was the daughter of Michael Van Buskirk and Mary Van Deventer, who had come to Kentucky from New Jersey, via Virginia. How or why John had come to this area of Kentucky is unknown, but he and Mary had at least their first child born here. It is likely that John came to this area directly from Mason Co., KY and that when he returned, he settled in the Ross County area where the rest of the Thomas group was locating. John and Mary had 5 known children, the last few born in Ross Co., OH. By 1819, John had moved west to Vigo Co., IN, where he had a farm in Otter Creek Township, just south of the border from Vermillion County, where other families of his siblings had settled. John died here on March 03, 1820 at the age of 68, and it is believed that he was buried on his farm. His widow Mary, fifteen years his junior, died twenty-nine years later in neighboring Vermillion County.
