About John Claypool (Claypole)
John Claypoole is the earliest proven ancestor of the Northamptonshire Claypoole family. (It has been suggested that he was the descendant of Richard Claypoole (Cleypole), constable of St. Andrew, or John Claypoole, Alderman of Stamford in 1495, but no real or conclusive proof can be found). John Claypoole married the daughter of Thomas Metcalfe of Walmesford, Northamptonshire about 1523. John Claypoole appears as a taxable resident of King's Cliff in the Northamptonshire Tax List of 15 Henry VII (1524). Children of John Claypoole include his eldest son and heir James Claypoole, who would later be knighted by Queen Elizabeth I and purchase Northborough Manor. Other children included Henry Claypoole, Robert Claypoole, and a 4th son who married Elizabeth Harrington. John Claypoole would die in 1558 and be buried in All Saints Church in King's Cliff, Northamptonshire. His will, shown to the right, is found in Northamptonshire Will Book II, p. 133. John Claypoole's wife Margaret was living at the time of his death as given in his will. This Margaret would strongly appear to be a 2nd later wife, and not his first wife who was the daughter of Thomas Metcalfe
