About John Covey

About 1830 John Covey was born to James Covey and Eliza Wills. John and William are twins. The family lived in Washington county, Ohio, at the time. They left Ohio sometime after his father's death in 1847. The family was in Astoria, Fulton, Illinois, at the time of the 1850 census.

On 14 Feb 1854, John Covey married Minerva Ellen Tracy, daughter of Lyman and Anna Tracy, at Rushville, Schuyler, Illinois. They had one daughter, Dora D. who was my great great grandmother.

On 2 Feb 1860 John married Nancy Jane Hemphill in Brown county, Illinois. That spring John's first wife cited their illegal marriage in her petition for divorce from John.

In the 1860 census John and N(ancy) J(ane) were living in Pittsfield twp, Pike, Illinois. Other members of John's family were also in Pike county that year.

In the 1880 census John and (Nancy) Jane were living in Richland, Cowley, Kansas. They had five children: Maggie age 17, John age 14, E.E.(male) age 9, Ada age 7, Mattie age 5, all born in Illinois.
