Jack immigrated to Rhodesia with his mother as an infant then on retirement to Canada to live with his eldest daughter, Daryl (Cheney) White. He was in the Postal Service and then served in the Rhodesian Government for 43 years and was with the Royal Corps of Signals.
Jack completed his initial schooling at Christian Brothers College in Kimberley and completed a Junior Matric after four years (during the Great Depression) at Bulawayo Technical School - now called Gifford High.
John Curtis (Jack) Cheney passed away peacefully in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, on Tuesday 17th February, 2009. His children, Daryl, Pete and Patricia were with him at the end. He was born on 20 August 1919, the son of Walter Shrive Cheney and Alice Elma Cheney (nee Curtis). He married Louise Schutte on 1 July, 1946, in Johannesburg and they lived in Rhodesia until his retirement in 1979. Having lived in Durban, Richmond and George, Jack emigrated to Canada in August 1999 following the death of Louise in April 1999.
Jack was much loved and respected by all who knew him. He was an extremely honest and kind gentleman, always going out of his way to help others. He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.
He lived his life by the following proverbs:
Manners maketh man
Exercise mental cleaniliness and bodily cleanliness will exercise itself
This above all - to thine own self be true and it must follow, as the day, the night, thou canst not then be false to any man.
