!1988 OBTAINED INFORMATION FROM GEORGE DOUGLASS OF CHATEAUGAY NY HIS MOTHER HELPED DR. ERNEST Gardner DOUGLASS A LOCAL DENTIST GATHER FAMILY INFORMATION IN 1952. NOTES FROM THAT SEARCH HAVE LEAD US TO BELIEVE THE FOLLOWING: JOHN DOUGLASS BUILT A HOME IN SOUTH KINGSTON RHODE ISLAND IN 1752. HE MOVED TO DUTCHESS COUNTY NY IN 1772. HIS GRANT WAS CALLED "NINE PARTNERS" BUILT A HOME IN AMENIA NY IN 1772. THEY HAD 8 CHILDREN.

LAND RECORDS SHOW THAT ON 30 MAR 1752 HE BOUGHT A PLOT OF 34 ACRES OF LAND IN SOUTH KINGSTOWN AN ON 4 DEC 1752 HE BOUGHT 1/4 ACRE THERE ON WHICH HE SUBSEQUENTLY BUILT A HOUSE, BARN AND BLACKSMITH SHOP. HE SOLD THE FIRST PLOT OF LAND 5 MAY 1766 THE JOHN DOUGLASS HOUSE, A VERY BEAUTIFUL ONE, IS STILL STANDING. [WAS RENOVATED RECENTLY AND RESOLD IN 1986] [SKETCH OF HOUSE IN BOOK] THE LAST PLOT OF LAND WITH THE HOUSE, JOHN SOLD 12 FEB 1772 WHEN HE WAS ALREADY LIVING IN THE EASTERN TIER OF THE LOTS OF THE PATENT KNOWN AS "GREAT NINE PARTNERS" or "Nine Partners" AND WHICH AFTERWARDS BECAME PART OF THE PRECINCT AND LATER THE TOWN OF AMENIA. He was still living there in 1777. HE SIGNED THE AMENIA PACT. HE PROBABLY REMOVED FROM THERE TO NEW BRITAIN (NOW PART OF NEW LEBANON, COLUMBIA CO. N. Y. THEN IN KINGS DISTRICT, ALBANY CO. N. Y. SOMETIME DURING OR AFTER THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. THE CENSUS OF 1790 LISTS JOHN DOUGLASS living at Kinderhook, Columbia County, and this may have been he. (PROBABLY JOHN JR. AND SAMUEL WAIT NEXT TO EACH OTHER IN NEW BRITAIN THEN A PART OF CANAAN IN COLUMBIA CO. N. Y.) A will of Abrahm Patterson of Kinderhook, dated January 17, 1797, shows John Douglas as a witness. It seems probable that this was the same person. He may have died in Kenderhook subsequently. One line of tradition has it, however, that he moved to Hampton, Washington County, with his sons John and George about 1791. !A TRADITION IN THE DOUGLASS FAMILY WAS TO THE EFFECT THAT THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF SILENCE DOUGLASS BEAMAN FOLLOWED HER TO HAMPTON N. Y. FROM RECORDS, IT WOULD SEEM THAT THIS WAS TRUE.

Family Search shows death before 1790 and in Waukegon, Lake Illinois

Land records show that on 30 Mar 1752 John D Douglass Sr bought 34 acres and 04 Dec 1752 he bought 1/4 acre thereon which he subsequently built a house, barn and blacksmith shop. He sold the first plot of land 05 May 1766. The John Douglass house is still standing on the south side of Kingstown Road between the Tavern Hall Club and Waite House, this residence was built by John Douglass in 1753 on land purchased from Elisha Reynolds in the previous year. The large central chimney of th house is marked with the initials JL with D set above them and the date 1753. On the quarter acre of land he had purchased, John Douglass also erected blacksmith shop.

There he followed his trade until 1772 when he and his wife moved to Dutchess County New York, having sold the house to George Teft, also a blacksmith, from whom it passed to Timothy Peckham in 1792. For the period 1912 to 1938, the John Douglass house was the historical center of Kingstown since it containedon the lower floor a museum sponsored by the Narragansett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1938 it became a private residence once again.

When John David Sr Douglass was born in 1728 in Kingston, Jamaica, his father, George, was 38. He married Lydia TRIPP on September 9, 1750, in Washington, Rhode Island. They had 11 children in 21 years. He died in 1790 in Kinderhook, New York, at the age of 62.
