Land and religion were vital in the life of John and others who
lived in Scotland and it seems that land and religion led to his
departure. Land was controlled by the Catholic Church. It could not be
owned by an individual, but rental rights could be acquired in four
ways: (1) by grant of the church; (2) by succession; (3) by kindness or
as a gift for service; (4) by marrying the daughter of a renter.

"The Temporall land of the Archbishoprick of Glasgow are the
Baronies of Glasgow, Carstairs, Ancrum, Lillisleaf, Eskirk, Stobe and
Eddiston, with ye Bishops Forest and other little things in Carrick,
Lothicin and elsewhere ... Carstairs was situated in the quietter
district of Lanarkshire ... The Royalty embraced the city of Glasgow and
a wide district on the north, east and west, comprising the Barony
Parish, the Parish of Cadder, the Parish of Govan, and a large portion of
the Parish of Old Monkland."

"The Township and Barony of Carstairs belonged, from the middle of
the twelfth century, if not from an earlier period, to the Bishops of
Glasgow, the rents thereof forming part of their personal revenue. Their
title to it was confirmed by Pope Alexander III in 1170, and by Honorius
III in 1216."

There was a John, who rented land from John Gibson, 3 Oct 1549, in
Glasgow Diocese (p. 142). John Alison rented land from John Alison, his
father, 25 Aug 1563 (p. 177). Robert Alason rented land from John
Alason, his brother, 5 Dec 1545, (p. 187). Jonat Allason rented land
from William Alanson, her father, in 1545, and she was the wife of James
Mylar (p. 163).

As for religious problems: "The religious fervor burnt high and
fiercely. Following the disposition of the Queen Regent, an alliance was
formed with Queen Elizabeth of England. In 1560, the Scottish Parliament
abolished Roman Catholicism and established Calvinism, forbidding the
celebration of Mass under dire penalties. The civil war which ensued
after Mary, Queen of Scots return from France in 1561 continued
throughout her brief reign until 1568, when her abdication was followed
by her flight to England."
"The Presbyterian system was established throughout Scotland
although resistance to it was great in the Highlands. This sytem had a
penetrating influence on the population and gave them a sense of
independence, for unlike the Church of England where the clergy came
mostly from the upper classes, the Presbyterian system gave every church
goer a say in the government of the church, and the ministry of the
Scottish Church was mainly from the lower or middle classes."
Mary, Queen of Scots, was beheaded and Elizabeth I, Queen of England
died in 1603. James I, son of Mary, Queen of Scots, became King of both
Scotland and England, even though they were two separate countries.
James set about to bring religious and social changes to both Scotland
and England. It was during this time that the King James Bible was
translated (1611). So there were the Scottish Highlanders resisting
change, the Scottish Lowlanders accepting Calvinism, the Puritan

So join me, please, on this journey of self-discovery. Come meet the people whose lives live on through yours. Come meet them in their place; in their time. Come with me to a vast, treeless plain, cut through by a swift and shallow river. Come visit a place called Windyedge, in the Lowlands of Scotland. Walk through this meager village, with its mud lanes and its thatch hovels. Come with me to the late 16th century, and witness the early years of your progenitor. His name is John…
We know almost nothing about the early years of John’s life. We don’t know the date of his birth. We don’t know his parents’ names. We don’t know whether he had any siblings. We don’t know where he was educated, or even if he was educated. We don’t know exactly where he lived, or in what kind of dwelling. We don’t know what his standard of living was. We don’t know his religious persuasion. We certainly don’t know what he looked like. We don’t even know exactly what his surname was, or how he spelled it. There are many things about John that we simply do not know. But there are some things we do know, at least with reasonable certainty; and there is much we can say about the world in which John lived.
So we begin where John was born—at a place called Windyedge,1 just west of Strathaven (pronounced Strā´ - ven), a rural market burgh (town) in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The town grew around the Powmillon Burn, a stream that flows about one mile south to the Avon Water, a tributary of the River Clyde. The area is about 20 miles south of Glasgow, and about 60 miles east of Scotland’s western shore.
The name Windyedge was apparently a nod to the often harsh, windy conditions endured by those tho settled there.2
Strathaven takes its name from strath (valley) and aven (river). This ancient, rural town has a history that predates its royal charter, received in 1450, which made it possible to hold markets and establish businesses there. However, the town never really outgrew its agricultural roots, despite the charter. By 1637, long after John’s departure from the area, there were less than 50 residences.
Though its daily activities were unremarkable, Strathaven did have one noteworthy building—Strathaven Castle. When John was born, the castle was in the possession of the Hamilton family. Remember the name Hamilton, as you will be hearing about it again.
And so our progenitor, John, was born in the Scottish countryside, near a small market town, defended by a castle. Knowing where he was born gives us a good starting point from which to begin our study of our past. However, to form a complete context for our study, we also need to know when he was born. Many researchers estimate 1589 as the approximate year of John’s birth.
So, what was it like, living at Windyedge in the latter years of the 16th century? More specifically, what was it like for John? Was he educated or illiterate? Was he wealthy or poor? Did he learn a trade or farm? Unfortunately, we just don’t know.
We do know, however, that, if John was born at Windyedge in 1589, he was born in the realm a man named Charles James Stuart, otherwise known as King James VI of Scotland. This is the same King James who, in 1603, became King James I of England, making the two nations a “united kingdom.”
John, if he was born in 1589, would have been about 14 years old when the entire island he lived on came under the rule of King James. He would also have reached his majority around 1607. As we will learn in later issues, many significant events took place in Scotland and England, not to mention Ulster (Northern Ireland today) and Virginia, in and around the year 1607.
Even though we will likely never know with any detail the specific events of John’s life, we can look back at his place and time and make some educated guesses, in light of the prevailing economic, religious, and political conditions of John’s day.
But that will have to wait until next month. You won’t want to miss it, for the picture will get a little clearer as we begin to take a closer look at the life of a “typical” Lowland Scot in the early 17th century.
For now, I will leave you with some words King James said to the English Parliament, in 1604, about the union of Scotland and England:
“Hath not God first united these two Kingdoms both in language, religion and similitude of manners? Yea, hath He not made us all one island, encompassed with one sea, and of itself by nature so indivisible as almost those that were borderers themselves on the late borders, cannot distinguish, nor know, or discern their own limits?
“These two countries being separated neither by sea, nor great river, mountain, nor other strength of nature, but only by little small brooks, or demolished little walls, so as rather they were divided in apprehension rather than in effect; and now in the end and fullness of time united, the right and title of both in my person, alike lineally descended of both crowns, whereby it is now become like a little world within itself…
“What God hath conjoined then, let no man separate. I am the husband, and all the whole Isle is my lawful wife: I am the head, and it is my body: I am the shepherd, and it is my flock. I hope, therefore, no man will be so unreasonable, as to think that I, [who] am a Christian king under the gospel, should be a polygamist, and husband to two wives; that I, being the head, should have a divided and monstrous body; or that, being the shepherd to so fair a flock, whose fold hath no wall to hedge it, but the four seas, should have my flock parted in two.”3

Information provided by Carl Ellison. In 1702, Gerrard was one of the Representatives to the Virginia Yearly Meeting. Gerrard had a gun and a pair of stillards confiscated for hie refusal to pay the levy for the minister's salary. Later he had a horse taken, to pay the tithe.
In May of 1730 Gerrard Robert II purchased 22 acres from Samuel Bugg.
Gerrard was appointed treasurer for the Henrico Meeting.

BIOGRAPHY: BOUNDARIES MAY FLUCTUATE, BUT ELLISON HOMESTEAD STANDS by: Terry Callahan, Record Staff Reporter.
Remember the days, not too long ago before this wide territory was crisscrossed with the boundary lines of counties and states? The ELLISON family remembers, because the ELLISON homestead has the unique distinction of being in the path of those fluctating boundary lines. The ELLISONs claim that the old homestead has been in one territory, two states, two counties and four school districts--without ever moving.
Man had not yet drawn all the imaginary lines to organize the wild west when Matthew Greenlee ELLISON left in the direction of the setting sun. Matthew's story is a bittersweet one, and his family likes to call it "The Boy Who Never Went Home."
Matthew ELLISON was only 12 years old when he left South Carolina to come west.
In 1873, as people ravaged by the Civil War looked west for new hope, a boy sometimes had to be a man in a hurry. Matthew was playing with a group of children when his mother called to him.
Mrs. ELLISON set down a small bundle of clothes and with tears in her eyes, she hugged him close and hold him he was going on the wagon train. Some of the men had been killed by marauders and they needed someone to drive one of the teams.
His job included gathering wood and water when they camped. He was to come home the next spring when the wagon train returned.
An adventure lay ahead, and excitement surely coursed through his veins as the wagon pulled away and he waved goodbye to his mother. He never dreamed that it would be the last time he ever saw his mother.
The trip to Texas apparently took Ellison about three years, because the last account the family in Carolina had of him was a letter saying he felt he would be in Jacksboro, long enough to hear from them. He was 16 years old at the time.
He looked for work to tide him over until someone made up a train heading east.
He worked as a farmer, and also at a new one gin stand, where he carried cotton in big hampers to feed the gin. Later, he drove the mail hack from Jacksboro to Weathersford, TX. Occasionally he would hear of a group going east--and once rode over 100 miles to the gathering place, but he was always too late, or didn't have enough money to go.
He met and married Effie Blanche Lauderdale, and since fate seemed to be holding him in the west, he decided to move on and get some land in the newly opened Oklahoma Territory. The couple moved with a wagon, some brood mares and cattle to Spring Creek, in what was then Greer County, TX. They lived in a dugout for awhile and then traded a wagon and horse, and some money to a Mr. Lauderdale for his homestead about 1/8 of a mile west of ELLISON's dugout. This is the home place where all of the ELLISON children would be reared. Matthre and Effie had four children, Bertha May, William Martin, Ruby Blanche, and Nettie Lee. When the youngest was an infant, their mother died. A descendant, Matt ELLISON of Sayre, said " She was doing chores, or something outside, when the wind got up and she accidentally sucked a piece of straw down her throat. Doctors couldn't get it out, and she just withered and died." The Spring Creek neighbors rallied to the widowed father's aid. The neighbor lady, who had a small baby, nursed Lee Ellison until weaning time. The neighbors recommended and introduced ELLSION to a suitable young lady for marriage, Miss Minnie Worthing of Venson, Oklahoma. The couple married on their second meeting in Mangum, Texas in Greer Co, 1895. Later in life, son Will described his stepmother, saying "what a God's blessing she was to the ELLISON family."
To this union 11 children were born, Jasper, Oma, John Ashley, Dortha, Lora, Anna, Matthew, Ural Raymond, Dodson, Cleta, and Elmo.
When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, the courts settled the boundary dispute, and the homestead became part of Oklahoma. It was formed out of Greer COunty on the North and Roger Mills on the south.
Now the ELLISONs lived in Beckham County. The homestead has also been in four school districts, first Spring Creek, then Delhi, next Ocina, and finally today in Sayre.
For that day and time, this huge family survived against incredible odds without any deaths during childhood. They survived a smallpox quarantine, the measles when their father became deathly ill, but lived; also the typhoid fever.

On January 7, 1941, Minnie Ellison passed away. Matthew died on September 9, 1954. He was 93 years old.
He had never been able to return to South Carolina, although a brother did come to visit him twice. He was buried in OKlahoma soil. Once in the 30's, Matthew planned a trip to see his parents along with a friend who was making a trip, to South Carolina. But Matthew stepped on a rusty nail and contracted blood poisoning. He was bedridden with his leg tied to a sling and suspended from the ceiling. His friend had to go on without him.

"Matthew Ellison....worked at a livery stable, then had the job of driving the mail hack from Jacksboro to Weatherford, TX for 4 or 5 years. He then married Effie Blanch Launderdale, and to this union four children were born: Bertha May, Willie Martin, Ruby Blanch, and Nettie Lee.
In May of 1893, Matthew Ellison and his family left in a covered wagon, with 9-10 horses and 10-15 head of cattle, for Greer County, Texas. They traded some of their llivestock and $300 in cash for land owned by Tom Launderdale and Scheler Richardson, in the vicinity of what we know now as Spring Creek."

!BIOGRAPHY: Martin Windle Cook served as a Marine, and then later enlisted in the Navy in World War II. He achieved the rank of Chief Carpenter's Mate.
BIOGRAPHY: He loved to make things from wood, and was an excellent craftsman. Many of the kitchen cabinets that he constructed in the 1950s in NW Oklahoma City are still in use today.
Graveside services for Martin W. Cook, 59, of 1812 NW 32, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sunnylane Cemetery directed by Hahn-Cook, Street & Draper Funeral Home. He died Saturday at Veterans Administration Hospital after a long illness.
Cook was born in Sayre. He came to Oklahoma City in 1956 from Ponca City. He had been retired since 1959. Previously he had been in sales. He served with the Navy as chief in World War II. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Louise; three daughters, Teresa, of the home; Mrs. Cecil Jeffrey, Ponca City, and Mrs. June Cudd, Long Beach, CA; a son, Carl, of Long Beach, CA; four brothers, Marvin, Orange, TX; Tom, Amarillo; Bill, Fairview, and Kenneth, Enid; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Hand, Ponca City; Mrs Joe Burgert, Ponca City, and Mrs. Ernestine Garrison, Oklahoma City, and his mother, Mrs. Bertha Cook, Ponca City.

Robert Kenneth Cook, 56, of 1502 E. Elm, died Sunday night when he lost control of his pickup and it overturned, landing on its top in a field off Garland Road, a half-mile south of Enid.
Cook was dead at the scene from massive chest and stomach injuries, according to the Highway Patrol. Enid firefighters worked for more than an hour to free Cook who had been partially ejected through the rear windshield.
Born in Berlin, Okla., Cook attended Ponca City schools. He married the former Mae Meyer on Oct. 26, 1941 at Jet.
He served in the Army during World War II. Afterward, he was a truck driver for many years.
For the past several years, he owned and operated Ken's Hedge and Tree Trimming Service.
Survivors include his wife Mae; two daughters, Mrs. Sandy Avery, Moore, and Mrs. Stella Bahe, Fayetteville, Ark; three sons, Harold Lee Cook, Moore; Kenny Cook and Bob Cook, both of Enid; his mother, Mrs. Bertha Mae Cook, Ponca City; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Hand, Mrs. Nina Burgert and Mrs. Ernestine Lamberti, all of Ponca City; three brothers, Tom Cook, Amarillo, Tex; Bill Cook, Broken Bow, and Marvin Hill, Orange, Tex.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Henninger-Allen Funeral Home chapel with Gardner Carson officiating.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
