John Elphinstone, 3rd Lord Balmerinoch[1]

John Elphinstone, 3rd Lord Balmerinoch was born on 18 February 1623 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[1] He was the son of John Elphinstone, 2nd Lord Balmerinoch and Ann Kerr.[1]

He married Lady Margaret Campbell, daughter of John Campbell, 1st Earl of Loudoun and Margaret Campbell, 2nd Baroness Campbell of Loudoun, on 30 October 1649 at Holyrood House Chapel, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[1]

He died on 10 June 1704 at age 81.[1] He was buried at Restalrig, Midlothian, Scotland.[1]

He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Balmerinoch [S., 1606] on 28 February 1648/49.[1] He was forced to sell most of his estates as a result of his father's debts and several lawsuits.[1] In 1662 he was fined £6,000 by the Scottish Parliament for his compliance with Cromwell's government.[1] He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Coupar [S., 1607] in January 1668/69.[2]
