About John Eppes, Jr.

John Eppes, Jr., son of John Eppes, Sr., was born in 1648. He was a prosperous landowner and farmer, with 500 acres on the rent roll for Charles City County in 1704, and 300 in Prince George County. This was in addition to the land inherited from his father. In 1712 he bought an additional 400 acres along Butterwood Swamp. He was active in the political life of his community, serving as sheriff in 1707 and as justice in 1714. John and wife Mary had six sons – John, Nathaniel, Thomas, William, Francis and Richard. He also gave sections of land to his brothers William and Frances. He died in 1722. He left his land to John, Nathaniel and Thomas, and divided the rest of his estate between wife and all six children. When his wife Mary died, she divided her portion of the land between sons William and Francis. The portion known as “City Point” was given to son William.
