About John Martin Friedel

John M. Friedel Proprietor of the Cambridege Hotel Native of Bavaria, immigrated at the age of 5 to a farm in Hebron wisconsin in 1848 mother died in 1852 father in 1868 in 1858 he went to New Orleans and then to Mexico. In 1861 he returned to Louisiana and enlisted in the 4th wisconsin Volunteer Company E under Col. Payne ( note: there are many articles on Payne being arrested for protecting the slaves that wandered into camp and aided the army) Mustered out at Motgomery Ala. June 1865
from notes Jean owns A grandfather clock made by his father is now in a local german museum left home at 15 because of the abuse of his 3 older sisters. His mother was dead and his father was blind. his two brothers were married. Got to the Mississippi River and worked on a steamer that piled the river between New Orleans and Minesota. Jewas in NO when the war began. He enlisted int army and was a private. he was made a colonel after the war by wisconsin Governor Hoard he never used the title.
Spring 1867 returned to Wisconsin Then went to Black Hawk County Iowa wherre he spent te summer farming. He next went to chicago Ill. there he was employed as an engineer of the Fire co. January 1878 he purchaed the Cambridge hotel and enlarged it bby and addition of 26 x 40 making a house with 13 good rooms and in may following took charge of the house and has since been the proprietor. the house has good accommodations and has a bar and stable attached. He married Sept. 3, 1868
