Will of John Furminger:

In the name of God amen. The five and twentieth day of October in the five and twentieth year of the reign

of our sovereign lord Charles the second by the grace of God King of England etc. And in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and seventy four. I John Furminger of Brede in the County of Sussex Yeoman being sick and weak in body but having perfect and disposing memory. Thanks be to God. Do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say.

Imprimis. I commend my soul into the hands of God hoping in his mercy through the merits of Jesus Christ to receive remission of my sins and eternal salvation. And my body I yield to the earth to be buried in decent manner. And as touching that temporal effects God hath given me I will and give same as hereafter followeth that is to say I will and bequeath unto the poor people of the

parish of Brede aforesaid twenty shillings to be paid and distributed amongst them at the discretion of my Executor hereinafter named presently after my decease.

Item. I will give and bequeath unto my loving wife ten pounds of lawful money of England.

Item. I will and bequeath unto her one bag of wheat and one flich of Bacon and twelve pounds of Butter and one pair of course sheets and one new covering.

Item. I will and bequeath unto my son Samuel Furminger Six score pounds of lawful money of England, to be paid to him when he comes to the age of one and twenty

years, in case he die before becoming that age then my mind wills that the said six gross pounds be equally divided between my two daughters Mary and

Elizabeth afore mentioned. If either of my two daughters

die my mind wills that their heirs should enjoy their allotted proportion. Also I give unto him the said Samuel one bed and bedstead with all things belonging thereunto and one chest and two pairs of fine sheets.

Item. I will and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Freebody fourscore pounds of lawful money of

England.

Item. I will and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Seers fourscore pounds of like money provided always and it is my mind and will that after my debts and legacies herein bequeathed are paid andmy funeral expenses with the probate of this my will discharged all and whatsoever shall remain over and above of my personal effects shall be equally divided unto and among my son Samuel and my daughters Mary and Elizabeth aforesaid if any overplus shall be. And if it shall happen

that when my debts and funeral expenses with the probate of this my will shall be paid and discharged there shall not be enough left of my estate to pay all the legacies herein bequeathed then my will and mind

is that my said son Samuel and my daughters Mary and Elizabeth aforesaid shall equally abate out of their legacies of one hundred and twenty, fourscore, and fourscore pounds above bequeathed them.

Item. I make ordain nominate and appoint my son in law Thomas Freebody of Brede aforesaid sole executor of this my last will and testament. And for and in

consideration of his care and pains in the execution of this my last will and testament I hereby bequeath to him ten pounds desiring him to see the same executed in all things according to my true intent and meaning. And also I earnestly instruct my loving friends Samuel Horne

of Brede aforesaid Clerk And John Waters of Udimore in the County of Sussex to be the Overseers of this my last will and testament requesting also their care and diligence to see the same effected according to my true intent and meaning and in consideration thereof I do hereby bequeath to each of them ten shillings.

And lastly I do hereby revoke and make void all former wills by me made or declared whatsoever. In witness whereof I the said John Furminger have hereunto set my hand and seal dated the day and year first above written.
