About John George Gilmore

Mr. John Gilmore told the following information to his grandson, Melvin Gilmore, before his death in 1978.

Mr. John Gilmore waqs born in Bastrop County, Texas. HIs dad died while he was very young. His mother remarried to Mr. George Turner. John and Mr. Turner did not get along because John said he was a mean man. At the age of 14, John left home. His mother went to the neighbors and told them not to hire him, hoping he would return home. John would not return but instead went to Oklahoma where there were other relatives living. He kept in touch with his mother through an aunt living in Houston County.

Eventually, Jon moved back to Texas and went to Louisiana for a while. On a return trip from Lousiana to Texas, on horseback, he came through Crecy in Trinity County. A lady by the name of Mary Jones was sitting on the front porch of their home with her mother and John stopped by to visit. After he left, Mary told her mother that John was the man she was going to marry. John went back to visit often and in 1905 they were married.
