About John Gilman

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gilman-72

John Gilman was born perhaps Hingham, Norfolk, England,[1] say 1595 (assuming he was about 14 years old when he began his apprenticeship),[2] died perhaps Hingham, after 23 November 1651 (date his "wyfe" was buried, Hingham), the son of Edward Gilman,[2] whose wife's name is unknown. (See Research Notes.)

In 1609, John Gilman was apprenticed to John Bubbyn of Deopham, Norfolk to learn his trade as a worsted weaver. His father was noted as being Edward Gilman of Hingham, a sherman (a sheep shearer or cloth trimmer). The full abstract of the indenture is:[2]

"Gilman, Gyllmyne, John: son of Edward of Hingham, Norf., sherman; appr. John Bubbyn of Deopham, Norf., worsted weaver, 1609, for 7 years, D.153."
He likely completed his apprenticeship in about 1616.

John Gilman married in Hingham, 1 October 1626, Ann(e) Gurney,[3] whose birth and parentage is unknown. Anne was buried Hingham, Norfolk, 23 November 1651.[4]

Family

Children of John and Anne (Gurney) Gilman,[5] the first two baptized at West Dereham which is quite a distance from Hingham (26 miles, by modern means),

  1. Edward Gilman, baptized West Dereham, Norfolk, 26 October 1627.[6]
  2. Frances Gilman, baptized West Dereham, 2 April 1629,[7] buried at Hingham, 2 May 1631.
  3. Ann Gilman, baptized Hingham, 3 February 1631.
  4. Rose Gilman, baptized Hingham, 18 June 1637.
  5. John Gilman, baptized Hingham, 17 February 1638[9]. Emigrated to New England by 1658 when he resided Exeter, New Hampshire, with his cousins, the children of his uncle, Edward Gilman. He removed from Exeter to Piscataway, New Jersey; died at New Jersey, 14-25 October 1695. Was administrator of the estate of "his kinsman" Israel Folsom (1646-1677), otherwise the son of John and Mary (Gilman) Folsom. Davis refers the reader to Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (John Gilman) for "his marriages, children and public service."
  6. Charles Gilman, born Hingham, 12 May 1642. Emigrated to New England, first noticed at Exeter with his brother John and cousins, 1664. Removed to Piscataway, died there 1691/2. Here also, Davis refers the reader to Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (Charles Gilman).

Torrey and bibliographic notes. Noted genealogist Clarence Almon Torrey FASG (1869-1962) was a descendant of Edward Gilman (m. ____ Unknown) by this son John Gilman (m. Anne Gurney). See Gary Boyd Roberts, "Notable Kin: Seven Genealogists: Ancestors of John Farmer, Jr., James Savage, H.F. Waters, Mary L. Holman, C.A. Torrey, Elizabeth French Bartlett, and G. A. Moriarity, Jr.," in NEXUS, 13 (1995):25 (in James Savage), 26 (in Clarence Almon Torrey); digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors. For the Torrey entry, Roberts cites "Notebook labeled 'Ancestry,' carton labeled 'Torrey' (#10) in C. A. Torrey's mss. collection, SG TOR 5 (147) at NEHGS" and other works; none of the source titles specifically mention Gilman.

In the mid-1930s, then engaged in Gilman English research, Torrey wrote,[8] Edward^1 Gilman probably had a brother John who married at Hingham ... Anne Gurney, remarking about their sons John and Charles.

Torrey's article was shortly followed by entries for sons John and Charles in Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, part 3 (1936), written by, among others, Walter Goodwin Davis. This account includes notice that the immigrant John Gilman was granted administration on the estate of "his kinsman" Israel Folsom (1646-1677), otherwise the son of John and Mary (Gilman) Folsum.

Not long after Torrey's death, Walter Goodwin Davis published a genealogy of the this Gilman line, The ancestry of Abel Lunt, 1769-1806, of Newbury, Massachusetts (Portland, Me. : Anthoensen Press, 1963), 153-160 (Gilman, of Exeter) at 158 digital images, Hathi Trust.

Parentage. A prior version of this profile included, (1) "From many well-sourced websites, there is a clear reasoning that the mother and father of John Gilman is unknown, we only have a marriage record to go by. The rest of the information is "suggested" due to location of the marriage." [9] (2) Edward Gilman "probably" had brother John, who m. Hingham 1 Oct 1626 Ann Gurney. [The qualifier probably presumably comes from the location in Hingham.] [10]

Birth. A prior version of this profile included, "Date of birth estimated at 1600 due to date of marriage, but a merged profile had 1595."

Death. Records to prove the death of John Gilman have not be located. One John Gilman was buried Gimston, Norfolk, 9 December 1653; Norfolk Record Office, PD 687/2, citing Parish Burials, FindMyPast.

A prior version of this profile reported his marriage ended in 1639, the date the will of a different John Gilman (Gilman-265) was proved.
