Alexander Gertzen

Funeral for Alexander John Gertzen, 75, of Nipawin who passed way suddenly July 5 was held from the Nipawin United Church, July 11. Rev. Allan T. Shaw officiated. Burial was in Mabel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Gertzen was born at Morden, Manitoba, September 14, 1904. he received his education at Morden and his teacher training in Saskatchewan.

He taught at Buchanan, Sandhill Creek, Smeaton and White Fox until his retirement to Nipawin after forty-five years of dedicated service.

He enjoyed sports, community activities, photography, traveling and sharing his experiences with others. During his lifetime he was an active member of the Loyal Orange Lodge, Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation and a Scout Master.

He was a well respected member of the community and will be missed by his many friends.

He is predeceased by his parents and one brother. Mr. Gertzen is survived by his four sisters Lily Rempel of Steinbach, Man., Anne of Swaziland, Africa, Eva of Rochester, New York and Emma of Thunder Bay and one brother Garner of Regina.

Hymms were: “the Lord is My Shepherd” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. The Senior Citizens’ choir was in attendance and the organist was Mrs. C.L. Clarke.

Per Margaret Teichreb: For some reason he was walking in the street in the dark and was apparently attacked and killed. He was found the next morning. The person responsible for his death was never found.
