About John Haldane, 3rd of Gleneagles
He held the office of Ambassador to France and Denmark in 1473.1 He held the office of Master of the King's Household in 1477.1 He held the office of Lord Justice General of Scotland north of the Forth between 1477 and 1488.1 He held the office of Sheriff-Principal of Edinburgh in 1478.1 He held the office of Keeper and Governor of Berwick in 1482.1 In 1482/83 he resigned his lands in Perthshire, Stirlingshire and Fife to the King, and received a charter erecting them into the free barony of Gleneagles.1 He was recognised in chancery under King James III as having a principal right to the Earldom of Lennox through his wife. He concluded a settlement with John Stuart, 10th Earl of Lennox and 1st Earl of Darnley of the 1460 creation, bu which the latter received the title of the Earldom and half of the Lennox lands, and the former received one quarter of the lands with compensation.1
