Biographical Summary
"Sir John Hamilton-Dalrymplb, Baronet [S. 1698], of Cousland, Cranstoun, Fala and Oxenfoord aforesaid, 4th but 1st surv. s. and h., b. 15 June 1771, in Edinburgh; Ensign, 100th Foot, 1790; Captain, 3d Foot Guards, 1798-1814 ; Colonel, 92d Foot, 1831-43 ; Colonel, 46th Foot, 1848 till death, becoming General, 1838 ; suc. to the Baronetcy, 26 Feb. 1810; was M.F. (in the Whig interest) for co. Edinburgh, 1833-34. He m. firstly, 23 June 1795, at Kenilworth, co. Warwick, Harriet, 1st da. of the Rev. Robert Augustus Johnson, of Kenilworth, by Anne Rebecca, sister to William (Craven), 6th Baron Craven of Hamfsted Marshall. She d. 16 Oct. 1823, and was bur. at Cranstoun. He m. secondly, 8 June 1825 (at the house of her widowed mother), Adamina, 4th da. of Adam (Duncan), 1st Viscount Duncan of Camperdown, by Henrietta, da. of the Right Hon. Robert Dundas. She was living when, by the death, 20 March 1840, of his cousin, the 7th Earl of Stair [S.], he succeeded to that Peerage as 8th EARL OF STAIR, etc. [S.]."
