John and Rachel Hartley were dealers in Tea. In 1837 they operated out of 8 Arches Street, Halifax then they moved to 7 Bedford Street and lived over the shop. They later opened a Drapery business (Malcolm Bulls Calderdale Companion)
They were "Non-Conformists Methodists".
