John Pickard Hayes was a son of Joseph D. Hayes and Anna Pickard Forrest Hayes. John owned two photographic studios from 1901 to 1910 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The addresses for these studio were 124 1/2 Fayetteville St., Raleigh (1901-1908) and at 131 1/2 Fayetteville St., Raleigh from 1909-1910.

John married Aldonia Yearby on 24 Jan 1889 at House Creek Township, Wake County, North Carolina. To this union were born two sons: Raymond J. Hayes and Paul E. Hayes.

John remarried Cora Elizabeth Altman from South Carolina on 9 April 1899. To this union were born eight children (several of them dying as infants or young children): Beverley Linton Hayes, Dorothy Hayes, Edgar Hayes, Annie McGee Hayes, Mary Hayes, Gladys Hayes, Harlan Bryon Hayes, and an unnamed son that was born prematurely and lived only six hours according to the Hayes family Bible.
