Summary

• We know nothing about John Haynes other than his date and place of marriage to Alice Lambert. Based on this marriage record and her will it is theorized he was the father of the immigrant Walter Hayes. He certainly is not the son of Nicholas Haynes. The John Haynes who was son of Nicholas Haynes was baptized on 23 Jun 1569 in Salford Priors, Warwickshire, England and would have been only six years old when this John Haynes married. John Haynes preceded his wife so he must have died before 2 Mar 1620/1. His date of birth is unknown.
• Alice Hayme (sic), widow, of Semley, Wiltshire, will dated 2 March 1620/1, inventory taken 23 February 1623/4, will proved by her son Walter Hayme (sic), the Executor 2 Mar 1623/4. It includes the names of some of Walter’s children and they are identical to those of the immigrant Walter Haynes. Based on this evidence it is believed Alice Haynes was mother of Walter Haynes.
• An Alice Lambert married John Hynes on 23 Oct 1575 at Mary's Church, Sherborne, Dorsetshire. They had three children baptized there shortly after. It is thought that this Alice Lambert may be identical to Alice Haynes who died in 1623/4 above.
• Based on the date of marriage she would have been born by 1554 possibly near Semley or Sherborne.
• Children: John, Margery, William, Elizabeth, Walter, Susan, Rose
• Parents: Unknown. The parish registers and probate records near Semley and Sherborne have been searched. Unfortunately in most parishes the records don’t begin until the late 1600s so they are of no help. No genealogist has ever published arguments or evidence regarding her parents. An Alice Lambert was named in the probate records of John Lambert and Catherine Packington as daughter. It is exceedingly speculative to think these two women are identical without further proof. This evidence is not sufficient to prove her identity. Furthermore as the Visitation of Worcester p 102 shows these proposed parents were of London not even close to Semley, Wiltshire.
• Death: She died after 2 Mar 1620/1 when she made her will and before 23 Feb 1623/4 when the inventory of her estate was taken
• Nothing further is known about the birth or death of her husband John Haynes.
• Window Ursala Goodenow in her will probated 22 May 1634 in Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, named Alice’s son Walter Haynes “Cousin.” Ursales Goodenow was widow of Thomas Goodenow and mother two several immigrants of the name Goodenow of Sudbury, MA.

Biography

Alice Lambert was born in say 1554 (based on her date of marriage) probably near Semley, Wiltshire, England. She was possibly daughter of John Lambert born say 1520 in Semley, Tisbury, Wiltshire, England and Catherine Packington born say 1520 in Chaddesley Corbett, Worcestershire, England. They had a daughter Alice (based on probate records) but was their daughter Alice identical to this Alice? No other evidence confirms they are identical and the parish records in many parishes in the area don't go back to the early 1600s so these could easily have been two separate women of the same name. The evidence is insufficient to prove who the parents were of this Alice Lambert. The parents listed here include a noble lineage which should be treated as speculative only.

Their marriage and the baptisms of their first three children were found in the Records from the Registers of the Abbey Church St. Mary in Sherborne, Dorsetshire. The remaining children were named in the will of Alice (Lambert) Haynes. There is no evidence that they had a daughter Dorothy. Some people speculate that Dorothy Haynes was a child of John and Alice Haynes. Others suggest that Dorothy's parents were Walter Hayne and Alice Lambert. But there is no evidence to support either claim.

Myths and Legends born on the Internet

Several myths were started on Wikitree and have spread like wildfire across the Internet. At GENI we try to be more accurate.

1. Her husband John Haynes died in Connecticut. False, this is a conflation with John Haynes, Governor of Connecticut (1594-1653) concocted on the Wikitree. We know her husband John Haynes preceded her so he died before 1620 and never left England. This John Haynes never came to the colonies. See the Great Migration Directory p 156 for his son Walter and Drake's Founders p 57 and check the passenger list of the Confidence of London in 1638. He died before his wife in England.
2. There is a portrait of her husband John Haynes. False, the portrait is of John Haynes, Governor of Connecticut (1594-1653).
3. Her husband John Haynes was son of Nicholas Haynes. This is another Wikitree fantasy which is absurd. The John Haynes who was son of Nicholas Haynes was baptized on 23 Jun 1569 in Salford Priors, Warwickshire, England and would have been only six years old when this John Haynes married.
4. Her son Walter Haynes married Elizabeth Gould. False: Walter’s wife was Elizabeth but nothing is known of her maiden name. Gould often shown on the Internet (wikitree) is incorrect. That would be the name of Walter's daughter Elizabeth who married Roger Gould named in Alice's will. The name Gould was moved up a generation and given as a maiden name to Walter’s wife is someone’s deluded brain. It is erroneous.
5. Alice Lambert is of Noble Birth via her parents John Lambert and Catherine Packington. False, not a single genealogist has ever has ever published arguments or evidence regarding her parents. As fellows of the American Society of Genealogist remind us constantly simply finding two people of the same name in England does not even begin to prove they are identical. No serious genealogist would even begin to publish this exceedingly speculative pedigree. This evidence is not sufficient to prove her identity. The fact that these parents were born, lived and died in London far away from where we find this Alice marrying to John Haynes should raise concern. Probate and Will

“Alice Hayme,” widow, was living at Semley, Wiltshire, when she made her will. Alice's will was dated 2 March 1620/1, inventory taken 23 February 1623/4, and the will was proved by her son “Walter Hayme” (sic), the Executor. Mar 2, 1623/4. It was signed in the presence of Marmaduke Read, Walter Hayne, and John Blandford. Burial was in Semley Church Yard, Semley, Wiltshire, England. Semley is a parish in Wiltshire, 4 and 3/4 miles from Shaftsbury in Dorsetshire and in the vicinity of Sutton Mandeville.

This will is written on one page of one leaf folio paper, not signed. It is preserved among the Salisbury Wills, P. P. C. London (Archdeaconry of Sarum). Dated 2d March, 1620/1; proved by Walter Hayne the Exr., 2d March, 1623-4. For genealogists the most important part of the will which includes the same of several of the children of Walter Haynes of New England including the unusual name “Sufferaine””

"It: I give to Suffraine Hayne my best bore cloth and an apon and Marie Hayne a pillow-ber and one Pewter dish, and Elizabeth Hayne a Pewter dish and Suffraine a Pewter dish. It: My Sonn Walter Hayne shall have the use of my bigest brass pann during his life, wch pann I give to Thomas Hayne his sonn and my silver spoon. It: I bequeth to Walter Hayne my sonn the half years p'fitt of my tenement after my decease whom I make and ordaine to be my whole Executor to whom I bequethe all the rest of my goods." Inventory is dated 1623.

The Full Will:

This Will was found in 1879, during the research in England, among the old Wills of Salisbury (Co. Wilts), which are now kept in the Prerogative Consistory Court, at Westminster, London, for safety. See Chapter on English Research, page 9. Semley is about four and three-fourths miles from Shafton, Dorset, where Walter Haynes owned a house, and not far from Sutton Mandeville, where he lived, just at the time he sailed for America. This Will is written on one page of one leaf folio paper, and not signed. This may be because it is a copy of the original, or it may be because legal forms were sometimes neglected in those days. As will be seen at the end of the Inventory, it is recorded there: "Will Proved in the Court of the Archdeacon of Saruni (Sarum was the Latin name for Salisbury) by the Ex’or named, the 2 March, 1623."

The Will: "In the name of God Amen, the 2d daye of March in the xviijth yere of the reigne of our Sovraigne Lord King James and the yere of our Lord God One thousand Sixe hundred and twentie. I Alce Hayme of prfecte memorie praising God doe make this my laste Will and testament in maner and forme following. ffirst I bequethe my Soule to our Lorde Jesus Christ my only Savior and redemer and my bodie to be buried in the Church yeard of Semblie, It: I geve to the same Church vj. It: I geve to my daughter Elizabeth Read my great brass pot or Croke my best covrled and blanket one bolster one pillow and pillowber and my best gowne two wastcoates: ij aperons j smock j Coffer j barrell j tubbe It: I bequethe to hir sonne Christopher Read v: It: I bequethe to Thomas, John and William her sonnes each of them a Pewter dishe. Will Proved in the Court of the Archdeacon of Sarum by the Ex’or named, the 2 March, 1623. The "partlett" mentioned was a band or ruff for the neck. "Posnet" a porringer. "Stinger" an extinguisher (for candles). We have not been able to find the meaning of "beins" or "haingrells."
