John Dayton Hays was born November 9, 1824 in New York to John D & Abigail L (Benson) Hays. John Hays was married to Nancy Havens in 1845. To this union was born twelve children, Mrs. Marjory Hunter, Werley, Wis., Flagler Hays of Colorado Springs, Col. Lafayette Hays of Woodman, Wis., John H Hopkins, Minn., Alonzo Hays of Wyoming, Mrs Jennie McKichan of Mt. Hope, Frank D Hopkins, Minn., Daniel D Hays and four children died in infancy. Mr and Mrs Hays came to Wisconsin in 1862 and settled on a farm near Fennimore. From there they moved to a farm near Preston and from there to Livingston where Mr. Hays died Jan. 14, 1883.
