About John Hodges

GEDCOM Note

Email notes from Michael 21 Jan 2017 Firstly, I have confirmed beyond any shadow of doubt, that there was only one “John Hodges” on this ship, the Parmelia.

As detailed above, John Hodges was transported to the colonies as aconvict. His ship, the Parmelia, sailed from Woolwich on 4 Jul 1832 after receiving some of her cargo of convicts on the 2 previous days. She then docked at Sheerness to receive further convicts. Cholera was raging on board with 2 people dying before sailing for Sydney on the 23 Jul 1832. 2 more died during the voyage.

The Parmelia arrived in Port Jackson 13 weeks later on 16 Nov 1832. 4days later the Colonial Secretary, Alexander Macleay, held a muster on board. This is where the information for the indent lists was obtained, but no information about where the convicts were assigned on arrival. It wasn’t until Thursday 28 Nov 1832 that the prisoners were landed.

There is an entry in the “New South Wales, Australia, Settler and Convict Lists, 1787-1834”, that shows John Hodges from the Parmelia employed at the hospital in Sydney.

I have found the next reference to him in the “New South Wales andTasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849”, dated 1837. It shows JohnHodges from the Parmelia assigned to work for Thomas Wells at Liverpool. The next reference is in the “New South Wales, Australia, GaolDescription and Entrance Books, 1818-1930” which again confirms it is the sameJohn Hodges by his ship and native place. This is dated 13 Dec 1843 and appearsto indicate that he was admitted to “H P Barracks” at Penrith. He was “disposedof” also from “H P Barracks” 2 days later. Under the heading of “Behaviour in Gaol” there is a comment that is extremely hard to read, but definitely startswith the word “Withdrawn” followed by 3 or 4 indiscernible words, then “ThosWells Carcoar.” This ties in with the previous paragraph about his employment.

As Carcoar is only about 55klms south west of Bathurst, this possiblyis how he came to be in the Bathurst area.

He then received his Ticket of Leave on 23 Dec 1844, a very niceChristmas present. Again, reference to his ship, arrival date & trialdetails confirms it to be the same John Hodges. At the bottom of the Ticket, itstates “Allowed to remain in the district of Bathurst.”

The Sydney Morning Herald published a list of unclaimed letters onSaturday 5 Jun 1847, with “John Hodges, Bathurst” being one of the people listed.

It’s a pretty safe bet that this is “our” correct John Hodges, withthe “New South Wales, Australia, Registers of Convict’s Applications to Marry,1826-1851” tying them together nicely. The Reverend P Bourgeios of Bathurstgranted permission on 24 Apr 1848.
