1. John was born in the home of his mother's parents, John & Elizabeth (Newton) Lee in the 35th G. M. District, Scraven County, Georgia (NE of Cooperville)

2. John enlisted in 1861 with the Ogeechee Rifles becoming Company "K", 25th Georgia Regiment. He served 4 years in the Confederate Army, he served in Johnson's Army and received one wound, a shot through the leg, in the Battle of Chicamauga.
