About John Houchin
concerns
This John is shown here as having married both Martha Orford and Martha Alford on the same date. One of those events is obviously wrong. Further research is warranted.
brief biography
John was the son of Edward and Hannah Houtchens. He married Martha Orford and for several years lived in Goochland County, Virginia. It is known that he purchased several tracts of land in Amherst County, Virginia and it appears both he and his wife died around 1785. It is also known that in 1775 he and several other residents of Amherst County, (including a son, Edward) presented a petition to the Virginia Assembly requesting that a ferry be built to cross the Fluvanna River.
On February 19, 1768 he gave a mortgage to Spiers & Co., Edinburg, Scotland, on land "he now lives on" same being on the branches of Harris's Creek in Graham's Cove, Amherst county, VA. He further pledged as security three feather beds and furniture, four breeding sows, six barrows of a year old each, nineteen piggs marked with a cross and two slits in left ear, and a slit in right ear, one gray mare branded with an 'O' on near buttock five years old, and one dark bay horse about nine years old hi brand unknown, and one pen knife. Later when renewing this loan to Alexander Spiers & Co. Merchants of Glasgow, North Brittain, he pledged as additional security "one old Felt Hatt"
November 7, 1768 John Houchin purchased Ninety-five acres of land from Ambrose Rucker for which be paid five pounds. The records show that from time to time he purchased other tracts, the last one being 200 acres from Bartholomew Ramsey and lying on the north banks of Piney River.
Not much is known of John and Martha Houchin. They probably died about 1785 for the land alteration books of 1784-86 Amherst county show transfer of 318 acres of land to Benjamin Wright from John Houchin. A marginal notation on deed to Benjamin Wright in 1793 states that William Houchin "his heir" delivered original deed to Richard Harrison. (Richard Harrison was an attorney of Amherst county at that time) The above land lies in what is now Nelson county, Va.
