About John Edward Irvine

From https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/133298975

John Edward Irvine, resident of the Masonic Home of Florida, Saint Petersburg, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2010, at the age of 89. John was born Feb 3, 1921 in Owens Station, Ohio, to Ransom and Leona (Solomon) Irvine. He is survived by his sons, John R Irvine of Cotati, Calif., and Gary L Irvine of San Leandro, Calif.; step daughter, Bonnie Lantz of Mount Gilead, Ohio; sisters, Wanda Haynie of Alpharetta, Ga., and Ruby Daniels of Wilmington, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. He was preceded in death by his wife of twenty-nine years, Dorothy (Messenger) Irvine who died in 1975, and his wife of thirty-four years, Marie (Gibson) Irvine who died in 2009, and his brother Don Irvine who died in 2001. John was a veteran of WWII, serving over four years as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre in Lyon, France, and Basra, Iraq. He was a cook and told stories about the enormous meals he fixed. When he came home he never could cook meals in family-size portions. After the war he attended an agriculture college on the GI Bill, and then purchased a 120 acre farm from his father, in Chesterville, Ohio, where he had 30 milk cows, pigs, chickens, grew corn, soy beans, alfalfa, clover, wheat and oats, and raised his family. He farmed for over twenty years and then sold the milk cows and half of the farm. John began working for the Surge Milking Machine Company in 1955, selling equipment to other farmers for five years. In 1960 he then went to work for General Motors in Mansfield, Ohio, first as a pressman, then moving up into the quality assurance department. He sold the rest of the farm in 1967 when he moved to Mansfield. On his retirement in 1980, John and Marie moved to Florida, where they lived in Lake Okeechobee and Lake Placid before moving into the Masonic Home in 2008. While in Florida he took up fishing, purchasing a boat and catching fish for their evening meals. Missing the farm, he took up gardening with a special love for roses. John delighted in family gatherings with the Irvine and Messenger clans, enjoying his love of food and family. He was an active member of the Methodist Church and Masons wherever he lived, becoming a past master of Chesterville Masonic Lodge 238. He is remembered for his hard work, honesty, since of humor, and patriotism. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of the Masonic Home of Florida, on June 1st at 2:00 p.m., 3201 1st Street NE, Saint Petersburg, Florida 33704. John will be interned in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida with full military honors alongside his wife Marie.
