About John Jacob Karlik
At the age of fifteen, John Karlik and his sister came to America as orphans, having been sent for by their Joe, in Chicago. John remaind in Chicago for four years where he gained his knowledge of the English language. He became interested in the construction of machinery while working for Western Electric. About 1893 he moved to Rib Lake, Wisconsin. It was there that he received the Wedderburn Medal for hus invention of a novel bottle.
On 26 January 1897 John Karlik became a citzen of the United States, renouncing his allegiance to Francis Joseph II of Austria.
Alter John and Bertha were married in 1897, the settled in Phillips, Price County, Wisconsin. In 1911 due to a lack of work they moved to West Linn, Oregon
