John Johnston emigrated from Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania with his parents, John Johnston and Elizabeth (Campbell), and one sibling. He married his wife, Elizabeth Locke on May 17, 1762, in Rowan County, North Carolina. His wife was born in Pennsylvania in 1742 and died in 1815, one year before her husband, in Davidson, Tennessee.
