Senator's father succumbs

Funeral services are pending at Rose-Neath Funeral Home's Marshall Street Chapel for J. Bennett Johnston Sr., 83, who died Friday evening at his home following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Johnston, who lived at 730 Chinquapin Drive, was the father of Sen. J. Bennett Johnston Jr.

A native of Monroe, he had lived in Shreveport since 1910.

He was a retired attorney-at-law, and acting city judge for many years and the attorney for inheritance tax collection for eight years.

Active in civic affairs, Mr. Johnston was a member of the Board of Directors of First Baptist Church, Kappa Alpha Fraternity, American Legion and Forty and Eight. He was a past master of Shreveport Masonic Lodge and a member of Scottish Rite and El Karubah Temple. He was also a past commander of J. Milton Edwards Post 2238 VFW and past commander of the Department of Louisiana VFW.

Mr. Johnston was a graduate of Louisiana State University where he received his undergraduate and law school degrees. He was a veteran of World War I.

Survivors other than Sen. Johnston include his widow, the former Wilma Lyon of Shreveport; three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth P. Lochridge of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. William M. Allums and Mrs. Robert O. Allen, both of Shreveport; and 10 grandchildren.

Obituary from the Shreveport Times newspaper, July 24, 1977, Sunday, p. 10-A [excerpts]:

Funeral services for J. Bennett Johnston Sr., retired Shreveport attorney and father of U.S. Sen. J. Bennett Johnston Jr., will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church.

Officiating will be Dr. William E. Hull, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery under the direction of the Rose-Neath Funeral Home Marshall Street Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Johnston L. Allums, Robert M. Allums, William M. Allums Jr., Jack Dykes, J. Bennett Johnston III, N. Hunter Johnston, John B. Lochridge, Edwin C. Lochridge Jr. and James A. Reeder.
