John Jones (1840-1920) was the illegitimate son of John Caudle (or Cordell) and Chany Jones.

Although his grave marker lists a birth year of 1845, a Johnston County, NC apprentice bond for John Jones executed by Aaron Massengill dated August 26, 1850 indicates that he was 10 years old the preceding January, indicating that he was actually born in January, 1840. His age is also corroborated by the 1850 Federal Census of Johnston County, NC. The tragic early life of John Jones is recited in an autobiography dictated about 1912 to his granddaughter Ada (Clifton) Johnson (1902-1981) .

John Jones served in Company I, 24th NC Infantry Regiment, North Carolina State Troops, Civil War.

John Jones married Susan Jane (Cannady) Coats (1834-1920), widow of James William Coats (ca. 1826-1863), on August 20, 1865 in Johnston County, NC. Susan Jane (Cannady) Coats Jones was the daughter of Benjamin Cannady (ca. 1792-1873) and his first wife, Frances Creech (ca. 1798-bet. 1850/60) of Greene County, NC.

John Jones and his wife Susan Jane (Cannady) Coats were the parents of James Wyatt Jones (1866-1925, 1md. Levarah "Olivia" Creech, 2md. Isabella Johnson, 3md. Louie C. Smith); Alice Ann Jones (1867-1942, md. Edwin J. Clifton); John Romulous "Rom" Jones (1869-1942, md. Mary E. Creech); and Elizabeth "Bettie" Zora Jones (1877-1933, md. William C. Roberts).
