John Josiah was called Johnny by those close to him. In 1898 he made extensive diary entries about his solo camping trip between Montréal and Ottawa. In one of John's 1898 camping diary entries, he mentions working for Mr. Jephcott. The 1898 Montreal Directory shows James L. Jephcott of the Montreal Lithographing Company located at 95 Hallowell, Westmount, Quebec.
John was a farmer in Nipissing County, Caldwell Township in Northern Ontario on a farm he established before marriage, and likely it was in this area where he met his Scottish wife Catherine Jane Hamilton whom he always called Jennie. All five children were born at this location.
By 1923 in Sidney Township near Belleville, the family had relocated to southern Ontario where John was a farmer and owner of Victoria Dairy, which he operated for 18 years. For most of this period his five sons were expected and required to work on the farm and dairy. The family were devout Plymouth Brethren.
The remainder of this essay about John Josiah Millard is based on family memories and was challenging to piece together, some of the dates are fuzzy;
In the early part of World War II most or all of the sons had either joined the armed forces or were working and living elsewhere. Youngest son Frank Millard joined the Hasty Ps regiment in Belleville in the late summer or early fall of 1940. Frank Millard was engaged to be married in August of 1942 and had always wanted to travel across Canada, he had enough Army leave to be able to do this before the marriage. In February 1942 he visited his Uncle Percy in Kelowna and had his photo taken beside Percy's 1936 Austin Seven A.
One night (probably early 1943 - Frank Millard & wife Ruth Kleinsteuber were renting a small apartment in Belleville, she was pregnant with Ross, and Johnny came to the door to tell them about the fire, they moved to West Lake in the summer of 1943) the dairy caught fire and was totally destroyed. Some time after this event (dates are uncertain) John sold the farm property, arranged economical living arrangements for Catherine Jane in Belleville, and he moved to the Okanagan area of central British Columbia where his brother Percival Richard Millard was living and had extensive farmland.
Descendants of Percival Richard Millard reminisce: "Uncle Johnny Millard lived with us possibly a year in 1950. He then bought a house in Benvoulin just outside Kelowna and also a car. By 1955 he had some health issues, so he came back to live at the house with Percy, Docie, Don & Gladys. He stayed a while, I’m not sure how long, and then went back to Belleville, Ontario to his family."
Note: We know that Johnny lived with his eldest son Percy when he returned from the Okanagan, and that he and Percy visited briefly with Frank and Ruth in early 1954. Johnny died on July 22, 1954 at the age of 76.
