John was counted in a census in 1881 in Age 15 living at Ardgilzean Farm, Scone, Perth.. He was counted in a census in 1891 in Age 23 living at 82 South Street, Perth.. He was employed as in Railway surfaceman. David Cairnie died while gamekeeper at Megginch, it appears that my great grandfather John took over the gamekeepers job. Only 3 months later John and his wife mary Welsh had a child on the estate, only days after the un-named child was born Johns house was burnt to the ground. The lady of the Estate Namely Geraldine Drummond took this baby in to the big house to keep it safe while accommodation was sorted out for the Cairney's. John and Mary were so grateful they named the child Geraldine drummond Cairney. - notes from Neil Cairney I have since met up with Geraldine Drummond's grandaughter also called Geraldine, She had written to Megginch estate a few years a go and was invited to the the estate. She was given a tour of the house and shown into the bedroom were the baby was kept, the actual cradle was still in the room. Over the years the story of the house fire and this baby had passed down the drummond family and when Geraldine got in touch they knew exactly who she was. Cousin Geraldine has a letter which was sent to her granny for her 16th birthday from Lady Geradline, there is also a small lace doilie as a gift. I spent ages trying to figure out where this name Geraldine Drummond came from, its nice to know it came from a moment of kindness by the landowners. - Notes from Neil Cairney.
