An account in 'An Armorial of Jersey' published in 1863, of descendants of the family Le Couteur, formerly from St John, who were then living in Bellevue, St Brelade, refers to the general family origins as follows: 'From the testimony of the late Sir Isambard Kingdom Brunel, himself born on the patrimonial estate of the family, it seems that those of Jersey are an offshoot from the house of Le Couteur of Gisors, Department de l'Eure, where the parent stock still exists, represented by a Colonel in the French army.' It should be noted that Sir Isambard Kingdom Brunel was actually born on Portsmouth, but his father Sir Marc Isambard Brunel was born ion 25 April 1769 at Hacqueville, near Gisors, near Rouen in Normandy where members of his family had farmed land for generations. The reference is therefore implying that this was the house of Le Couteur at that time. In order to provide the ancestry of the long established branch that had been living on Jersey as much as 300 years earlier (since this is how far back this branch can be traced), the Hacqueville lineage would have to go back to at least 1450. All inhabitants of Jersy in the 1700s seem to be descended from the Le Couteur family living on the island circa 1460. If there were a common Le Couteur ancestor from Hacqueville, his family would have been living there from at least 1430 until 1863, and when 'Sir' Marc Brunel was born in 1769. Records on the family around Hacqueville, Gisors, are required to resolve this Le Couteur estate.
