John Langan, I

John Langan (1831-1900) was born in Ireland and migrated to the United States in 1848 where he worked as an indentured servant in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania until he retired to Ireland. (b. 1831, County Donegal, Ireland - d. circa 1901, County Donegal, Ireland, United Kingdom)

Birth:
John was born in County Donegal, Ireland.

Emigration:
He emigrated to the US around 1848. He was employed as a domestic by the Grey (or Gray) family in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. There are two Greys listed in the 1890 City Directory of Bethlehem: Jacob Grey who was a "railroader" who lived on Second Avenue in South Bethlehem, and Patrick Grey, involved with "confections" living at 522 Third Street in South Bethlehem.

Marriage:
He married Katherine Gallager (1831-c1922) in 1852 at Saint Joseph's Church, Bethlehem, Northhampton County, Pennsylvania.

Children:
Together they had the following children: James Langan II (1854-?); Edward Langan I (1858-1946) who moved back to Ireland and married Anne Boner and died in Maghery, in County Donegal; Ann Langan II (1860-?); John Patrick Langan I (1860-1930) who married Catherine Devaney (1863-1956) and stayed in the US; Mary Langan I (1862-?); Bridget Langan (1864-?) who moved back to Ireland and married Neil Gallagher; Bernard Langan I (1866-?); and Daniel Langan I (1870-?).

Return to Ireland:
John returned to Ireland with his wife and some of the children around 1865 and he died there around 1901.
