As a youth John Laughton left his birthplace in the Orkney islands off the northern tip of Scottland.He set sail as ships Carpenter in the "Sterling Castle"deserting ship on arrival in Sydney in 1836.This was fortunate as the "Sterling Castle"lost on Fraser Island and all the crew were murdered.He settled on the Lower Hawkesbuty becoming Boat Builder,Skipper trader and Orchardist.Ardently converted to Methodism by George Everingham he took an active part in the church filling every office open to a layman. recognition of his work is evidenced by the Memorial tablet in the Lower Hawkesbury Chapel,in Thr building of which he materially assisted.
