About John Peter Leonard
I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before my family moved into Rowan County, North Carolina. I was baptized there on March 14, 1748 at the First Reformed Church in Philadelphia. While in Rowan County, North Carolina, I was a Revolutionary War Patriot and fought with my father and four brothers with General Nathanial Greene at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. I went into Kentucky with Daniel Boone. In 1785, I was killed in an Indian massacre along with my wife Barbara and our two youngest children who were fifteen and thirteen at the time. Our son Valentine was captured by Indians but later released in a trade for Indian prisoners for white. We are buried in Mason County, Kentucky. This was a virtual "no man's land" of Kentucky's bloodiest era. The first twenty yuears of this county witnessed an Indian War that made of her the most notorious battleground of the west.

Religion: Old Reformed Church, 4th and Race Street
