About John Bower Lewis, QC

1817 Baptised at Holy Trinity Berwick upon Tweed 4 th August Father Captain 88th regiment. Living at Government House Berwick Northumberland.

Ottawa Mayor, Canadian Member of Parliament. He was born in France while his father was serving overseas with the 88th Regiment. His family came to Canada in 1820 settling at the Richmond Military Settlement outside present-day Ottawa. He studied law at Toronto and was called to the Bar in the spring of 1840. He moved to Bytown, as Ottawa was then known, in 1841 establishing a law practice there. In 1848 he was elected as the second Mayor of Bytown and in 1855 through 1857 served as the first Mayor of the newly formed City of Ottawa. In 1872 he was elected to the Parliament of Canada for one of the two seats in Ottawa. He ran again as an independent candidate in 1874 and during the campaign died after a short illness.

1840 Oct 17th married Anna Eccles at Niagara eldest daughter of Captain Eccles of Dublin ( Toronto ) and Weston nr Bath reported in the gentlemans magazine .She died Feb 1841.

1843 31st August married second time to Helen Street daughter of Capt. Benjamin Street of the Royal Navy. She died May 2nd 1856, preceded by 2 of her 6 children. Of These Olivia Henrietta m .K B Hunter. John Bower

connected with public works at Ottawa and William H is in a whole sale store in Montreal.

1848 became Mayor of Bytown, later named|Ottawa

1851C living at Bytown Ontario age 35 ( barrister) with wife Helen age 30 M.E. age 5, OH age 3, W age 1. also 4 servants. owning 2 cows , 1 horse , 2 carriages for pleasure , Stone house I storey on 2.5 acres.

1855-1857 Became mayor of Ottawa

1856 October 15 married Elizabeth Susan Wilson, daughter of Hugh Wilson of Gloucester Canada. Having by her 5 children. These are Anna Eva , Hugh Bower, Lillian Mary , Charles Albert and Winnifred Miriam.

1867  Created Queens Council  and elected to the bench of law 1871. President of the Ottawa Agricultural Society at one time. Returned as an MP by acclamation in 1872 and died 24 January 1874
