About John Lindsay of Balcarres

JOHN LINDSAY, LORD MENMUIR

Update 12/28/2021: (some info different) Lindsay, John, Lord Menmuir (1552 -1598)
John Lindsay was born in 1552, the second son of David, 9th Earl of Crawford, and Catherine, daughter of Sir John Campbell of Lorn. He was educated at Paris and the University of Cambridge. He became Secretary of State for Scotland, and was made a Lord of Session as Lord Menmuir. He was one of the Octavians, or eight persons in charge of the royal finances. He married on 29 November 1581, Marion, daughter of Alexander Guthrie and widow of David Borthwick of Lockhill. He bought Balcarres from his stepson, and made it the family seat. After the death of his wife, he married, 7 February 1590, Jane Lauder, widow of Sir James Forrester of Corstorphine, and of John Campbell of Calder. He was the father of David Lindsay, 1st Lord Lindsay of Balcarres. He died 3 September 1598.

John Lindsay apparently had a third daughter not yet shown (listed in following passage), and his second wife, Dame Jean Lauder, apparently has a foul temper:
"He was twice married, first, in 1581, to Marion, daughter of Alexander Guthrie, burgess of Edinburgh, and widow of David Borthwick of Lochhill, Lord Advocate from 1573 to 1580, by whom he had two sons, John and David, and three daughters; secondly, to Dame Jean Lauder, the dowager lady of Corstorphin, who, described as "a termagant," made his life very uncomfortable, and was even imprisoned for her violence. By this lady he had no children."
