John Herman Luukkonen

26. Sept. 23, Herman Lukanen, a boy about 14 year's old, was killed in a stope at the 14th level, south of No. 4 shaft, Osceola Mine, by a fall of hanging rock. He was carrying a pail of water for the miners to drill with when the rock fell, striking him on the head.

An inquest was held before Justice Jones of Osceola township. Patrick and James O'Brien, miners, who were working in the stope at the time of the accident, testified that they had examined the ground and had taken down all the loose rock before they started to drill and thought it was perfectly safe. They were at work themselves almost directly under the rock that fell. The rock in falling struck Patrick on the leg injuring him slightly. The rock fell suddenly without any warning whatever.

The jury returned the following verdict : "We, the jury, find that Herman Lukanen came to his death by the falling of some trap rock from the hanging wall, accidentally, in the 14th level south of No. 4 shaft in the Osceola Mine, on the 23rd day of September, 1896."
