John Master of Maxwell had by his wife, Janet Crichton, eight sons and two daughters. The sons were

1. John, who succeeded him as fourth Lord Maxwell. 2. Robert, ancestor of the Maxwells of Cowhill, Killylung, Dinwiddie, and Broomholm, all in the county of Dumfries ; and of Drum park and Glenarm in the stewartry of Kirkcudbright. Robert was witness to the infeftment of his brother John as heir to his grandfather, Robert, second Lord Maxwell, in the lands of Carnsalloch, in the county of Dumfries, 8th May 1485. 3. James, ancestor of the Maxwells of Cavens, in the stewartry of Kirkcudbright, believed to be now extinct in the male fine. 4. Homer, ancestor of the Maxwells of Portrack, in the county of Dumfries. 5. John, Abbot of Holywood, in the county of Dumfries. 6. Thomas. A precept was given by Nicholas Makgee of Balmagee, dated 11th December 1488, for infefting Thomas Maxwell, brother german of John Lord Maxwell, in liferent in the granter's ten pound lands of Nether Camdudzale and others, of old extent, in the lord ship of Balmagee and stewartry of Kirkcudbright.1 Thomas was ancestor of the Maxwells of Glenesland, now Gleneslin, in the county of Dumfries. 7. William. In a charter by John, fourth Lord Maxwell, to his sister Christian, dated 14th October 1497, one of the witnesses was Wil liam Maxwell, the granter's brother. 1 Original Precept of Sasine at Terregles. 8. George, who was probably named after bis maternal grandfather, the Earl of Caithness, was provided by his mother to the lands of Barnton, in the county of Edinburgh. The lands were resigned by her into the hands of King James the Second, who, by a charter under the Great Seal, dated 25th March 1460, confirmed these lands to George Maxwell.1

The daughters were

1. Janet, who married William 'Garble, son and heir of John Lord Carlile of Torthorwald, in the county of Dumfries. 2. Christian. Christian Maxwell, sister-german to John, fourth Lord Maxwell, obtained a charter, dated at Keltoun, 14th October 1497, from Herbert Maxwell of Knkconnel, who designates her his cousin, of his 1 shilling lands of Keltoun and Greynmarsh, in his lordship of Kirkconnel and shire of Dumfries, in liferent all the days of her life, for rendering thence annually a red rose at the feast of the nativity of John the Baptist upon the ground of the said lands, in the name of blench farm, if asked only. In the charter the granter states that, led not by force or fear, but by ardent affection, he granted it to her in her pure and honest vnginity, on account of the true love which he had towards her, and for her gratuitous and meritorious counsel, assistance, and service hitherto rendered and to be rendered to him. Among the witnesses were John Lord Maxwell, Master Herbert Maxwell, vicar of Carlaverock, Thomas Maxwell, the granter's paternal uncle, William Maxwell, the granter's brother, Bobert Neilson, his maternal uncle, and Bobert Maxwell, his cousin. 2 John, third Lord Maxwell, had also a son named Herbert, said to have been illegitimate, who was the ancestor of the Maxwells of Hibs and Drum coltran, in the stewartry of Kirkcudbright. 1 Eeg. John (Maxwell) Maxwell Lord Maxwell was killed at the Battle of Lochmaben Fair during the Anglo-Scottish Wars.
John Maxwell, was designated as Lord Maxwell, and is sometimes referred to as 3rd Lord Maxwell, but he died before his father and in other sources is given the title, Master of Maxwell.[1][2][3]

John was killed at the Battle of Kirtle (a.k.a. Battle of Lochmaben Fair) in Annandale on 22 Jul 1484.[1]

John married Janet Crichton around 1454. She was the daughter of George Crichton, Earl of Caithness. [4] They had eight sons and two daughters:[1]
